Peter Kuitenbrouwer: Replacing TTC collectors with machines not as simple as ...

A TTC employee in a reflective vest enters the booth; she says he is repairing the booth’s “holdup alarms;” buttons in secret locations in the booth that, when an employee activates them, send a message to Transit Control that calls the police.

I ask whether she feels more vulnerable today, given the gunman who shot her colleague at Dupont Station on Sunday night.

“I don’t like what happened but I can’t let that affect my work,” she replies. “It didn’t happen to me, and not everybody is bad.”

Councillor Doug Ford, speaking to reporters on Monday morning at his weekly weigh-in, expressed sympathy for the injured collector; as a solution, he suggested we replace our collectors with machines.

“In New York there isn’t any collectors,” Councillor Ford said. “You use your pass or your card. Maybe that’s the avenue to look at.”

There are a few problems with this assertion. While it is true that New Yorkers swipe rechargeable plastic cards to pay their $2.25 subway fares — and can recharge them from machines using debit cards, credit cards or cash — New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority staffs hundreds of subway booths, many of them 24 hours a day. These people sell cards, give out maps, give directions and watch over the stations, just as they do here.
