What once ranked with reading novels and daydreaming as one of the most solitary of human activities is out in public, literally and virtually.

This homey hobby is enjoying a sort of revival, fueled in part by a sophisticated generation of young women - and a handful of men - in their 20s and 30s who want to share their shear time.

"We've seen this rise, especially in social knitting online," said Interweave publicist Jaime Guthals. "There are millions of knitters who don't have a local yarn shop and don't know where to find other knitters."

They have no problem finding kindred spirits online. Ravelry is the Facebook of knitters and crocheters, with members throughout the world who share project photos and chat, and download free and not-free patterns.

And while some bricks-and-mortar knitting-shop owners concede that they are still trying to drum up business to compete with knitting websites, they say their shops are nurturing a need among needle-wielding clients and doubling as community cliques, where the Internet can't.
